Hi, friends—home stretch! Thanks to
for guiding us back to ourselves last week. Why do you make art? is one of the questions I’ve been asking in the book interviews and, for the most part, the answer seems to be some version of I don’t feel good/like me when I don’t; making art makes me feel more like me/the way I want to feel.
Why do you make art? How does it make you feel? Share in the comments or reply to this email, I’d love to hear your answer.

A few years back, this video about the real story behind the Semisonic song “Closing Time” made the rounds:
Here’s the gist—most people think the song is about leaving the bar at the end of the night, but it’s actually about leaving the womb.
Closing time, open all the doors
And let you out into the world
Closing time, turn all of the lights on
Over every boy and every girlClosing time, one last call for alcohol
So, finish your whiskey or beer
Closing time, you don't have to go home
But you can't stay hereI know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home
Alright, here it is: our final theme of the project is closing time. Maybe it’s about what it’s literally about. Maybe it’s about something else. Maybe other people don’t get it, maybe we are those people. We contain multitudes; it doesn’t have to be about one thing.
Let’s reflect:
What did you think your project was about when you started it a few months ago?
How has that shifted, if at all? What does it feel like it’s about now?
What’s next for you? (I’m thinking about doing
’s 1000 Words of Summer—I’ll be on my road trip, but mayyyybe I can swing it??—if anyone wants to join.)
Spend some time over the next few days thinking about what would make your project feel complete. You may choose to continue—I’ve seen 100 Day Projects turn into multi-year projects. You might have already wrapped on Day 62. Wherever you are, whatever you’ve done, your efforts are worth acknowledging and celebrating. Speaking of celebrating, what do you think about getting together in person? We’re helping folks organize local meetups all around the world. Click the link below for details.

Why do I make art? Good question. I have never ever asked my self the reason why I felt compelled to create. Making art has always been second nature to me sort of like breathing. I don't remember ever not making art. It is just a part of my being. It is my happy place, my sedative, my love. So I create!
